I wrote in my IELTS essay: "Less people attended the event than expected." Is that okay?

Correction

Less people attended the event than expected.

Fewer people attended the event than expected.

"People" is countable — use "fewer", not "less".

Use "fewer" for countable nouns (people, tickets, errors) and "less" for uncountable (time, money, traffic). Correct: "Fewer people attended the event than expected." Memory trick: fewer = things you can count one by one.
